Devlog 05 - Character Poses & Animations

In this blog, we will share the details of the creative process, the challenges we face, and the progress we make. Are you ready to dive into the dark world of Memento Machinam? Join us on this journey!

-/ Handcrafted Terror: Bringing the Enemies of Memento Machinam to Life.

Creating a terrifying and immersive enemy experience requires more than just high-quality models and animations. Our approach blends traditional illustration techniques with modern motion capture technology to ensure that every movement, attack, and idle stance conveys the horror and brutality of Memento Machinam’s abominations.

To achieve this, our team of artists meticulously illustrated and animated each enemy pose by hand. These detailed sketches serve as a vital reference for our motion capture actors, ensuring that their performances align perfectly with the grotesque, nightmarish designs of our creatures.

This process allows us to maintain a strong artistic vision while also capturing the organic, unpredictable motion needed to bring our cybernetic horrors to life. The fusion of handcrafted 2D art and high-fidelity motion capture enables us to create uniquely unsettling enemies that move with an eerie blend of mechanical precision and organic instability.

-/ Visual Breakdown: From Sketch to Motion Capture.

One of our most recent challenges was designing the attack animations for the Cyberzombies, heavily corrupted human-machine hybrids that roam the desolate cityscapes of Memento Machinam. To ensure their movements reflected their unnatural, decayed cybernetic enhancements, we created a sequence of hand-drawn attack poses before moving into the motion capture phase. Above, you’ll find GIFs showcasing these attack animations in their final form.

Alongside the cyberzombies, another terrifying entity emerged from our dark world—Bloodbound Son, a grotesque genetic aberration forged in the depths of corporate bioweapons experimentation. Unlike the cyberzombies, whose movements are erratic yet calculated, the Bloodbound Son’s very existence is a writhing mass of flesh and synthetic sinew. To capture its disturbing presence, we illustrated a series of static poses detailing its unnatural contortions, which later guided our animation team in creating its fluid, eerie motions.
